With the assistance of local Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs, our Scouting for Food Drive is WFCM’s largest single day food drive. Each year the food drive is held on the second Saturday of November.
The Saturday before the food drive, scouts distribute bags in their local communities. People fill the bags with food, and then on the morning of the drive, scouts return to their routes and pick up all the donations. The food is then dropped off and quickly sorted by volunteers at the sorting site in Chantilly. From there, the food makes its way to WFCM, where it is stocked on our pantry shelves.
Typical items that we ask for Scouting for Food include:
- Canned tuna, ham, chicken, turkey or beef
- Canned Fruit
- Peanut butter and jelly
- Cereal and oatmeal
- Beans – dried or canned
- Macaroni and Cheese
- Pasta and Pasta Sauces
- Rice (small bags or boxes)
- Canned tomatoes – whole, diced, or stewed
- 100% Fruit Juice
- Flour, Sugar, Oil
